Hay Bluff & Cat's Back

Meeting time/point: 9.30am at Cat's Back Car Park

Distance: 13km Ascent/descent: 350m Time: 5-6hrs

We start with a long, steady ascent up the peaceful upper Olchon Valley then continue along the ridge to Hay Bluff to enjoy stunning views into Wales. We retrace our steps for a short distance to then fork off down the exhilarating Cat's Back ridge. Parking is limited so car sharing is coordinated.

MODERATELY CHALLENGING

2-Ridge Walk above Llanthony Priory

Date: Thursday 20th August 2026

Meeting time/point: 9.30am at Llanthony Priory car park

Distance: 15km Ascent/descent: 800m Time: 6-7hrs

This is a horseshoe walk with the first leg ascending from Llanthony Priory onto the Hatterall Ridge and walking along Offa's Dyke to descend to Capel-y-Ffin. We then ascend again to walk the second leg back along the parallel Bal Bach ridge before descending to the start point. This provides extended distant views along both sides of the England/Wales border.

CHALLENGING

Gaer, Crug Mawr & Sugarloaf - 3 peaks

Meeting time/point: 9am at Llanthony Wood car park

Distance: 21km Ascent/descent: 1000m Time: 7-8hrs

This physically demanding walk has three steep ascents / descents crossing arguably the most attractive parts of the Black Mountains around an extended loop. A wonderful mix of hilltop views, bucolic valleys and ancient woodland. Parking is limited so car sharing is coordinated.

LONG & CHALLENGING

Pen-y-Gadair Fawr & Waun Fach

Date: Thursday 22nd October 2026

Meeting time/point: 9.30am at Blaen-y-Cwm car park

Distance: 14km Ascent/descent: 450m Time: 5-6hrs

This walk starts with a long, steep climb ascending Pen-y-Gadair Fawr for 360 degree panoramic views. The walk continues along the ridge to Waun Fach, the highest point in the Black Mountains, before descending via a gentle track past the Grwyne Fawr reservoir. This is a real wilderness experience with big skies and distant vistas.
